Three people, along with thousands of dollars in stolen property, are in police custody. It's the result of an investigation that's been going on for several months and spans three counties.
A flat screen television, trailers, lawn mowers, dirt bikes, and a Yamaha Rhino all-terrain vehicle sit in a storage facility in Moulton. The high priced goods are all stolen.
Moulton Police Chief Lyndon McWhorter says his department recovered the items late Wednesday night from residences in three separate counties - Lawrence, Colbert, and Franklin counties.
The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, Littleville Police Department, Russellville Police Department, Franklin County District Attorney's Office, and Franklin County Sheriff's Office assisted the Moulton Police Department in the case. The value of the stolen property is estimated to be at least $20,000. McWhorter says the thieves took the items to be sold or traded.
"They would take these items and move them out quickly," says McWhorter. "They're not taking them for their personal use, but for money."
Two Franklin County residents are facing charges in this theft ring. douglas Macarthur Martin, Jr., 33, and his wife, Wayna Green Martin, 37, are each charged with first-degree receiving stolen property.
Moulton police are also holding 37-year-old Jesse Taylor on an unrelated charge. At this time, Taylor is being questioned and is considered a person of interest in the case.
Because this activity is suspected to have been going on for several months, McWhorter believes there is more stolen property still out there.
"We do know that there is a large amount that we have not located," says McWhorter. "We need help locating items taken in these burglaries."
Some of the recovered items are unclaimed. McWhorter also wants people who've been burglarized in the last several months to contact the Moulton Police Department to see if their property can be identified.
If you have purchased items from Douglas Martin or Jesse Taylor, the Moulton Police Department asks that you contact them at (256) 974 - 3961.
