GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) — An Etowah County grand jury says three Gadsden police officers were justified in killing a man who had just attacked and seriously injured his girlfriend and her son.

District Attorney Jimmie Harp says an Alabama Bureau of Investigation report reviewed by the grand jury said the officers followed procedure when the killed 40-year-old Sedrick Bernard Cox just before 6 a.m. on July 1.

Gadsden police officers responded to a call about a stabbing and say they followed a blood trail to a wooded area and found Cox hiding.

The officers say Cox, charged at the officers and three of them fired at him.

Gadsden Police Chief Richard Crouch says the officers, who have not been identified, are expected to return to work soon.
