NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Relatives of a man who died while serving a five-day sentence at the Warren County jail are suing the sheriff and staff there.
Ebodio (ee-BOH'-dee-oh) Castillo (kas-TEE'-oh) died in June from complications of bronchopneumonia. Many fellow inmates have said he spent his final night gasping for breath, crying in pain and begging for help but was ignored by jail staff.
Medical records from the jail show he was given some Tylenol on his second or third day in custody and not treated again.
Sheriff Jackie Matheny said his staff did nothing wrong. He said Castillo refused medical help.
The local district attorney general, Lisa Zavogiannis, has declined to bring any charges.
Castillo's relatives filed the suit on Monday.
