Police officers put their lives on the line every day. Many have the security of an unseen shield that can protect them in the event they're shot or assaulted. Others, however, do not. A Muscle Shoals police officer is working to change that.
"Our goal is to get every officer in the United States a bulletproof vest if we can," says Lt. Clint Reck.
Reck and two other partners, formed the Armor of God Project in 2009. They collect donated vests and send them to male or female officers who don't have one because their departments can afford to buy them. The vests are sent in from agencies all over the U.S. And come in all sizes, from small to extremely large. Many are basically brand new.
"This one looks like it came out of the box," describes Reck, as he holds up one of the vests. "That's about an $800 vest."
Providing protection for law enforcement officers is only one part of the Armor of God Project.
"The biggest goal is to get the gospel out," explains Reck. "Without that, this project would never have taken off like it has. God is the one who made this grow."
Along with the free vests, recipients are sent literature about Christianity. Whether it's a thank you letter from an officer's spouse who sleeps easier at night or actually keeping an officer out of harm's way, Reck believes they're doing the right thing.
"He's got a plan for everybody and every vest," says Reck. "It's been a blessing to get to see how that goes through."
The Armor of God Project currently has operations in 38 states and the Phillipines, Guatamala, and Costa Rica. So far, they've distributed 691 vests and their inventory exceeds one million dollars. Get more information about requesting or donating a vest through the Armor of God Project.
