Butler has been out of work for months, but he says he's not down and out, his wife has a good job and the couple's surviving. Either way it goes he's forced to make a career change.

"I'm transitioning from an academic background and having the MBA, but not necessarily having the experience to go with it has been a challenge," he said.

Challenge is a word job placement agencies are familiar with too. Snelling Professional Services in Huntsville has seen its share of hard times in this lagging economy. George Barnes made it his career helping accountants, engineers, and people with clerical backgrounds land a full-time job.

He said finding employees for banks wasn't difficult but now banks are not hiring like before.

"That was a wonderful job until about 6 months ago. Right now banks are staying very lean on their hiring and it's extremely difficult to get them to hire bankers."

There are less job options for everyone, but Barnes says there is a bright spot in all of this, more temporary job placement is popping up.

"When times are starting to get better companies will add temporary people before they'll go out and hire their own people."

It's good news for people like Anthony Butler, who's looking for a job in contract management.
