SCOTTSBORO, AL -
The Alabama Department of Public Health says tests confirm an 11-year-old Scottsboro boy died of the H1N1 virus earlier this week. A spokesperson for the health department confirmed the test results to WHNT NEWS 19 on Wednesday.
Alex Garcia died Monday at Highlands Medical Center in Scottsboro. The health department says it is conducting further tests to see if other factors contributed to the boy's death.
Visitation for Garcia will be from Noon Wednesday until Noon Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church in Scottsboro. The funeral will be at noon Thursday at the church. Following the ceremony, Garcia will be laid to rest at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Garcia is the third person to die of H1N1 in Alabama. State health officials say this death serves as reminder of the need for everyone to take additional precautions because of the early onset of influenza in Alabama.
Garcia was a sixth grader at Collins Elementary School.
