SOMERVILLE, AL -
Decatur Police and several other agencies teamed up to arrest a man driving a stolen car. Decatur Police chased him for 41 minutes, finally arresting him in front of the Somerville Post Office.
Police say the man is Michael Lacy Peterson, 32, of Athens.
The chase started around 9:30 Friday morning. Police say the man was blaring music, violating the city's noise ordinance near 16th and 19th avenues in NW Decatur. A Decatur police officer had a driver pulled over, and when the officer looked up, he noticed the man was driving a stolen car. Police had discussed the car in their morning briefing.
The officer tried to approach the man, but he sped off.
The chase went through several Decatur streets, and the man then got on Interstate 65, drove south and took the Falkville exit. He went through Highway 67, Highway 157, and police put down spike strips and stopped the car in front of the Somerville Post Office on Highway 67.
Seven agencies responded when the man was stopped... including the Cullman Police Department, which flew its helicopter to help in the chase.
Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett was glad it ended safely.
"It was a wild chase. He was going around vehicles and going around the spikes and it got pretty dangerous that's the reason we tried to stop him pretty quickly. To get these things where they don't have a wreck with someone else."
Michael Lacy Peterson has been charged with Reckless Endangerment, Attempting to Flee or Elude, Resisting Arrest, Driving While Revoked, and Violation of the Sound Control Ordinance. A felony investigation is being conducted into the vehicle theft and felony charges are expected to be added against Peterson. No one was injured during the chase.
