DEKALB COUNTY - DeKalb County sheriff's investigators are working to iron out the details in a shooting that happened Wednesday night in the Ider community.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris says Jerome Higdon, Leon Jones and two juveniles were coon-hunting around 7pm, on County Road 146 about 500 yards inside the DeKalb County line.

While hunting, two men confronted them -- Harold Thompson, 51, and William Thompson, 19, both of DeKalb County.

Sheriff Harris says gunfire erupted between both parties. Higdon was shot in the shoulder, and Harold Thompson was struck in the stomach. A 16-year-old was grazed in the back, but not seriously hurt.

Higdon drove to the North Sand Mountain Shell Mart to call for help. Both Harold Thompson and Jerome Higdon were taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. Thompson is in serious condition, and Higdon is also at Erlanger in a regular room.

Sheriff Harris says investigators are still looking into the case. His department is working with Jackson County Sheriff Dennis Miller and his team, the Ider Police Department, and the Drug Task Force.
