ETOWAH COUNTY, AL -
Authorities have found the driver who hit two Etowah County inmates Wednesday morning while they were on trash detail. Robbin Wade Mashburn, pictured here, says he thought he hit a mailbox instead.
One of the inmates was seriously hurt.
The hit-and-run happened about 11:40am on Sardis Road, near the Leeth Gap Road intersection. Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin says Mashburn hit the inmates, who were picking up trash along the road. The inmates, Dennis Glass, 29, and Danny Vaughn, 23, are part of the Influence Program.
Paramedics took both men to Marshall Medical Center South. Glass was more seriously hurt, and was flown to Huntsville Hospital where he is being treated for several broken bones and a bruised lung. Vaughn was treated and released from Marshall Medical Center South.
Deputies immediately started to look for a red extended cab pickup truck with damage to the passenger side mirror. A deputy spotted a truck matching the description on Scott Road, which is about a mile from the scene of the wreck. The deputy noticed the truck had damage to the passenger side mirror, also.
The deputy questioned Mashburn, the truck's owner. He said he thought he hit a mailbox. Mashburn is 35 years old.
Mashburn is charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident. He is being held in the Etowah County Jail on $25,000 bond.
