HUNTSVILLE—
It started out as just a couple of plates of food here and there, then Thanksgiving dinner. One man's kindness out of his heart has turned into a big Christmas present to a homeless camp here in Huntsville.
The man known as, Cowboy, he's William Winton, got it all started.
He began coming to the homeless camp off of Holmes Avenue under the Parkway overpass bringing a couple of plates of food whenever he could.
Then this past Thanksgiving Winton cooked up a spread for the homeless.
"The food is excellent," said Debby Sullivan, a meal recipient.
Here's why he's doing it.
"People under the bridge don't have transportation to get different places, so I thought I would just bring my kitchen here. So they could just take a few steps and get a meal," said William Winton.
His generosity has rubbed off on a big company, the Target Distribution Center.
His niece works there.
"I was so amazed by it and I was like telling everybody, I was like we can do that. So we all got together and decided we were going to join him on Christmas and come out and make it bigger," said Renee Clark.
Cowboy, along with a group from the Target Distribution Center provided turkeys, ribs, barbeque and all the fixins to go with it, including desert.
Cowboy says he just wants to help those in need.
But for Debby Sullivan, it's an act of kindness that means so much more.
"It restored my faith in humankind because I was lacking in it. Because there's a lot of people out there, just bad people. It brings tears to your eyes, but they're tears of joy. It lets you know that there are people out there that care," said Sullivan.
Cowboy says since the Thanksgiving dinner they were also able to place two portable bathrooms at the homeless camp.
"I just figured there's got to be a way to do it. About a week ago an anonymous donor, thank you, came out and gave us an envelope. In the envelope was $300 bucks. So that's going to keep bathrooms under here for two months," said Winton.
A team effort to bring a little holiday cheer to those who perhaps need it the most.
