HUNTSVILLE, AL—
This week, families will sit down to give thanks for what they have. However, this may not be a bountiful season for some families who struggle to put food on the table. The Food Bank of North Alabama wants to help feed those families, but organizers need your help.Dick Hiatt is the Executive Director with the Food Bank of North Alabama. He said his agency is in need of more donations in order to help hundreds of families who can't afford to buy food right now.
"Every bit helps, a can is as good as five or 10 cans, and a dollar goes a long way," he said.
Hiatt points out that some counties served have unemployment rates as high as 18 percent.
"We see a lot more demand in Madison County, but if you get out into the rural areas where a lot of job losses occurred, it's even higher," said Hiatt.
The rising need for food keeps Gloria Hollins busy. She manages the warehouse.
"We really are in need of the staple foods such as rice, the canned meats, the dry goods like macaroni and cheese," Hollins said.
The Food Bank of North Alabama wants to get families in need squared away by Wednesday, so there's still time to give. And if you're able to give an extra Thanksgiving turkey, volunteers will gladly accept it and take it to families.
Hiatt and Hollins say their clients will need a lot more food and monetary donations during the Christmas holiday season, too. For more information on where you can drop off donations, call the Food Bank of North Alabama at (256) 539-2256. The Food Bank is located at 2000 Vernon Ave SW in Huntsville.
