New Madison County Jail Nears Completion
HUNTSVILLE - After months of planning and re-planning the new Madison County jail in Huntsville is almost completed.

Tuesday board members for the Public Building Authority got an update on the Huntsville built Madison County Jail, that was expected to be completed more than a year ago.

"Something unexpected comes up, but I think that we're really closing in on it now," said Oscar Montgomery, board chair.

Montgomery said originally the jail was budgeted for $26 million dollars but unexpected expenses came up.

"We've had a serious upgrade, the jail that's being completed now, the one that we have the certificate of occupancy for is not the jail originally priced at $26 million," said Montgomery.

Even after drafting the jail's initial plans seven years ago, changes had to be made, which ultimately pushed the grand total near $78-million.

Now, it all boils down to a list of about 10 modifications for the jail. Jeff Easter Director of General Services for the City of Huntsville said they're almost finished.

"The original scope of work is complete. All except the video visitation, we're currently working with the sub-contractor to finished that part of the project up," he said.

These modifications came with a price tag of half a million dollars that the PBA approved.

"It includes upgrading the intercom system, it includes adding food port pass for some of the doors."

Whatever little bit of work is left the PBA Board is ready to see this project done.

"And we want to do that as quickly as possible because we have maintenance contracts or warranty contracts that are running now on all of the systems that are in place," said Montgomery.
