Christopher Glynn Whiting, 28 (Cullman County Sheriff's Dept.)
LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL -
Lawrence County authorities have charged a local man with stalking and impersonating a public servant following an incident involving an 18-year-old girl. Sheriff Gene Mitchell says Christopher Glynn Whiting, 28, went to residents posing as an Alabama Department of Public Health employee who wanted to collect water samples.
One of these incidents took place on July 14. Sheriff Mitchell says Whiting went to the home of an 18-year-old woman, and said he was there to collect a water sample. She let him inside. He then told the woman he could help her get a job with the state. Sheriff Mitchell says Whiting talked the woman into allowing him to give her a ride to a state office site where she could fill out an application. However, Mitchell said Whiting drove the woman to his home in Logan, which is in Cullman County, where he tried to lure her into his bedroom.
The woman became very upset and begged Whiting not to hurt her. He then drove the woman back to her home.
The woman reported the incident to both Lawrence and Cullman County law enforcement. However, they didn't know Whiting's identity at the time.
Another incident happened on September 24. Sheriff Mitchell says Whiting went to a new home where the woman had moved. Following that event, investigators were able to identify him. They searched his vehicle and found several items which could be used to bind victims, including handcuffs, wire ties and mouth gags. Investigators also found a pistol, stun gun, condoms and three fake IDs.
Sheriff Mitchell said it was obvious Whiting had the items with the intent to bind and control someone.
Cullman County investigators linked Whiting with some recent crimes in their jurisdiction. They charged him with first-degree kidnapping, attempted rape, and second-degree forgery. He is currently in the Cullman County Jail.
Once he is released from there, Whiting will be transported to the Lawrence County Jail where he will be formally charged with stalking and impersonating a public servant.
Sheriff Mitchell said that there may be other victims that have not come forward. If someone has approached you in this way, please call the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office at (256) 974-9291.
