NEW YORK, NY -
The Late Show with David Letterman follows WHNT NEWS 19 at 10:00 every weeknight. The late-night leader is known for its host, guests, Top Ten List, and other segments like Stupid Pet Tricks, and Stupid Human Tricks. Have you ever thought about auditioning for one of these funny segments? WHNT NEWS 19 and the Late Show are teaming up to give you the opportunity right here in Huntsville next month.
We sent WHNT 19's Venton Blandin to New York City to visit the Late Show with David Letterman to get an idea of what to expect at the auditions.
What's it going to take for the average person to make an appearance on the show? A show producer says first, and foremost -- they will have to be themselves. Of course, you'll need to have a good trick for yourself, or the pet.
Do you think you, or your pet have what it takes to be on the Late Show with David Letterman? If so, Ryan Williams wants to see it. He is the Tricks Coordinator for the late-night leader. It is his job to look for human interest stories.
"Anybody who does something out of the ordinary. People with crazy talents, or weird hobbies," said Williams.
The latest search to find the crazy and weird is coming to Huntsville. The Late Show team will hold auditions for Stupid Human and Stupid Pet Tricks on Saturday, December 12 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. A representative from CBS, as well as folks from WHNT NEWS 19 and WDRM 102.1 FM will be there.
Williams says people and pets have figured out they could do strange things, or even the scary ones.
"It's my job to find those people, and get them to New York," added Williams.
Williams says it can be hard booking people for a spot on the show. It's the reason his team is always looking through different sources to find those zany stories.
"We get hundreds of newspapers in from all over the country, lots of blogs, and different websites that we're combing through. We're always looking for interesting, wacky, and quirky people to put on the show," added Williams.
Sure, combing through all those sources can give several options, but it's not about the quantity. It's about the quality.
"It takes a very special sort of story to be that magic bullet, or something that's going to make everybody smile as soon as they see it," added Williams.
One bullet that hit Williams came from a lab mix named Babe. Babe's owner said the dog could count by barking any number one through 10.
Williams knows every animal can't count, but hopes to find that special thing in Huntsville.
"We are really excited to go down there," he said. "It's an area we haven't been for a while."
"We're always looking for untapped potentials rather than going for the same sort of market over and over again," added Williams.
The producers believe the Rocket City has potential to shoot someone to the Big Apple.
So, what do you need to do to get selected?
"Basically, what we are looking for is what we haven't seen before. It's really hard to describe," added Williams.
Williams says he'll know it when he sees it.
"It's like wow, I have never seen a dog do that, or I cannot believe that guy just did that thing," added Williams.
The show producer says even so, he still can not tell someone what needs to happen at the audition.
"If we could describe it, then we'd be able to hire somebody to go out, and do it for us. That's not what Stupid Human Tricks is all about," added Williams.
Ryan Williams told WHNT NEWS 19 everyone with a trick should come out to the audition, but should not expect to go far if the trick has your dog giving a high five, or rolling over. Williams says he sees those tricks all the time.
