HUNTSVILLE, AL - As a health care reform bill gets closer to a vote, doctors from across the country are gearing up for the Million Med March. Physicians involved in the grassroots movement say they are unhappy with the proposed health care plan being pulled together by the Obama administration.

Physicians want Americans to have another "option".

A note about an upcoming health care rally is posted outside of Dr. John Fanning's office of internal medicine in in Huntsville.

"I think people do need to understand we do need changes in health care in the United States," said Dr. Fanning. "What we're doing right now is unsustainable from a financial standpoint."

At the last minute, he decided to make a sacrifice and end his work week early. Dr. Fanning plans to head up to Washington, D.C. and participate in the Million Med March. Doctors from across the country will protest the latest health care reform proposals coming out of the White House.

"We're going to walk the halls of Congress and talk to our representatives and let them know we're not happy with the way this proposal is going and we think some alternatives could come about," said Fanning.

Dr. Fanning said in his 17 years of practice, doing something like this is very new to him.

"I never thought it would be this bad, I've never been a politically active person, and I got more and more frustrated the more I learned about the proposals in Congress."

With skyrocketing health care costs, Dr. Fanning said the latest proposals in Congress are far-reaching. He said he doesn't like the idea of the government interfering with the relationship between patients and their physicians.

"Really, my main concern is that relationship. I am an advocate for my patient and that's why I have chosen to work against this legislation because I feel like it's going to be devastating for health care in the United States," said Dr. Fanning.

He offered advice for people who plan on becoming a doctor in the near future.

"I discourage them or ask them to look very carefully at that decision because I think medicine is going to change in the next 20 years," said Dr. Fanning.

There's another rally scheduled for doctors and medical staff in Huntsville on November 21st at Noon. This will be held at the Medical Mall near the intersection of Governors Drive and Memorial Parkway.
