DECATUR -
People in Morgan County are getting ready for an election. The candidates running for sheriff have already started to campaign, even though the election is still more than a year away.
Some people are already making decisions on the Morgan County Sheriff's race and they don't even have to check the box until November 2010.
Signs are up for one candidate, Noel Mayfield who is running against incumbent Sheriff Greg Bartlett.
"Now is the time to get my name out there," said Mayfield. "I'm doing it, I'm hard at it."
Sheriff Bartlett may not have big signs on the side of the roads like his opponent, but he's getting plenty of traffic on his new Facebook account.
'Re-elect Sheriff Greg Bartlett.'
"My son has opened a Facebook page and it started that way. I can't believe how big it's gotten in the last 3 weeks," said Sheriff Bartlett.
He already has over 500 friends.
"This is just another way for us to reach the public and it's very inexpensive," said Sheriff Bartlett. "You can talk to friends and family and friends of their friends. Matter of fact we have had people that have given us information on crime on Facebook."
Mayfield, a retired Decatur Police Officer also has a Facebook account where supporters can join. Will it win the race for him?
"I think it is, but even it doesn't I feel like I've made some great friends on it, and caught up with some of my old friends that I haven't seen in years and it's fun," said Mayfield.
Bartlett says this kind of campaigning isn't so in your face.
"It didn't cost anything, they don't have to see it if they don't want to see it. If they want to come in and see they can come in and click off, and then it's gone away," said Bartlett.
Bartlett plans to post campaign signs in the fall.
The primary for the Morgan County Sheriff's race is June 2010.
