A Massachusetts couple that built and paid for a veterans monument has chosen to donate it to Lake Havasu, Arizona. Marc and Debra Blain announced their decision on Thursday.

Huntsville was one of 44 towns competing for the monument. The city made a strong effort to bring it here, launching an online letter of support that thousands of people signed. Mayor Tommy Battle wanted to place the monument in Veterans Park in downtown Huntsville.

Trent Willis, Chief of Staff for Mayor Battle, issued this statement on Friday about the matter:

"On behalf of Mayor Tommy Battle and the City of Huntsville, I'd like to congratulate Lake Havasu, Arizona on their selection as the new home of the Blain family veterans' statue. This effort showed that Huntsville truly honors our veterans each and every day – and thousands of individuals came together from all walks of life to reinforce that support. We would like to encourage those who supported this effort to continue that patriotism by finding ways to help our local veterans organizations, our first class Veterans' Museum and by buying a brick in our planned Veterans' Memorial Park.

The sacrifices our veterans have made will never be forgotten – and Huntsville will, as it always has, continue to honor our veterans each and every day. In Huntsville, honoring our veterans is not something we do – it is a part of who we are."

Veterans' Park is still in the works, and donations are needed to bring another planned monument there. Please visit this link for more information.
