OWENS CROSS ROADS, AL -
A house fire in Madison County left many people scratching their heads Friday night. It happened on Low Gap Road a little after 6:00p.m. Two people were inside the house at the time of the fire.
Police and firefighters in Owens Cross Roads are wondering how the fire started, but say they can't get a straight story. It was brought to their attention by a good samaritan.
William Blackwood lives next to the house that caught fire on Low Gap Road in Owens Cross Roads. He is the good samaritan.
"A lady who lives next door came over, and started banging on my door wanting me to call 911 since her house was on fire," said William Blackwood.
Blackwood told WHNT NEWS 19 burn marks were on the woman's hands.
"She was scared to death, so I called 911. Everybody showed up," added Blackwood.
Firefighters from Owens Cross Roads, New Hope, and Big Cove were sent to the home first to knock out flames. Owens Cross Roads police say they were called to the home just minutes after to break up an argument.
Firefighters say two people were in the home during the fire.
Blackwood says all all of that happened too fast for him to see the flames, but a smell was enough to cause concern.
"Worried. My house is so close to hers. Plus, it looked like she had been burned pretty badly," added Blackwood.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire. No one was able to get a clear answer about what happened before it started.
The Owens Cross Roads Fire Chief said the fire is still under investigation. An investigator was called to the scene just a little while ago. Police are also working an investigation.
Police and fire say the two people inside home at the time of fire have conflicting stories. The American Red Cross is assisting the two people who lived in the burned home. No one was hurt.
