Officials Warn Of Sanitation Scam In Powell
POWELL, AL - Officials in DeKalb County are warning people in the Powell area about a phone scam involving sanitation bills.

Powell Police Chief Stephen Dutton says several people in his town have recently fallen victim to the scam. Dutton says someone has been calling customers of the town's sanitation department, saying they are collecting past due bills. The caller then requests a credit card number and other information in order to make the bill current.

However, the town of Powell does NOT contact customers who are late on payment by telephone, nor does it accept credit card payments.

Powell Police are working with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department to warn people that these phone calls are scams. Please do not give your personal or credit card information over the phone. Always ask the caller to send you something in writing for you to review first.

If you have received or in the future receive any such phone call, please contact the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office at (256) 845-3801, or your local police department, and make a report.
