Rosie Le Peau

Rosie Le Peau

GARDEN CITY, AL - A three-to-four month-old puppy owes her life to the keen hearing of a Garden City resident who heard her whining and barking and Eric Allred, an employee of the Garden City Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Allred found the mixed-breed pup desperately clinging to the top of a six inch transfer pipe in the sewer lagoon, which moves water to the next treatment process. It is not known how Rosie got into the lagoon, which is 16 feet deep and fenced, or how long she had been in the lagoon. Allred said "she would never have been able to climb out because the lagoon is lined with plastic and she would have had no leverage".

Rosie is now known as "Rosie Le Peau" – pronounced 'La Poo'.

Through the combined efforts of C.A.A.W.A. (the Cullman Area Animal Welfare Assn) and Fairy Dogmother Rescue, Rosie was picked up and taken to Fairy Dogmother Rescue, where she received a bath to disinfect and remove contaminants she picked up in the lagoon. First aid antibiotic drops were administered to her eyes which had been irritated by ants crawling in them.

Rosie is currently being treated by a Cullman veterinarian who diagnosed a staphylococcus infection on her belly. He is providing additional treatment to her eyes. Her paws are swollen and infected as a result of her breaking off most of her toenails trying to climb out of the lagoon. The vet says injuries to Rosie's paws could also be the result of spider bites. He thinks she will have to have at least one of her toes amputated. Rosie's prognosis at this time is good. When she fully recovers from the infections she will be spayed and made available for adoption by C.A.A.W.A. "In the meantime we are hoping her owner comes forth to claim her", said Trudy Burns, C.A.A.W.A. Adoption Director.

Donations of any amount from the public are requested by C.A.A.W.A. to help defray Rosie's veterinary expenses. They can be mailed to C.A.A.W.A., PMD 106, 1612 2nd Avenue SW, Cullman, AL 35055 or left at any Cullman veterinarian's office.
