HUNTSVILLE, AL -
Just about everywhere you go in Huntsville, there's a house up for sale. Chances are potential buyers have checked them out, but seller beware, people may be looking for trouble.
Oscar Gonzales, CEO of the Huntsville Area Association of Realtors said there are people out there who are looking at your stuff instead of your house.
"It happens around the country quite a bit. Some of them are more severe than others. Some are very strategic and very skillfully planned," Gonzales said.
He said this happened right here in Huntsville, where somebody stole jewelry during an open house.
"We were made aware of it," said Gonzales. "We have several forums where realtors can alert each other within our MLS system."
Gonzales said the MLS (Multiple Listing Service) System is a password-protected online site that has listings of homes for realtors to access.
The most recent alert was posted a couple days ago, and the word travelled fast among realtors.
Gonzales said there are ways to help protect your belongings from being stolen.
Nationally, drugs and jewelry are the two biggest things that are stolen, so hide them.
To help prevent identity theft, put away certificates, checks, and other items that may reveal your personal information.
