RV goes off ravine in Colbert County, driver killed (Clarissa Stephens, WHNT NEWS 19 / November 24, 2009)
COLBERT COUNTY, AL -
A bizarre turn of events left one man dead, after he drove an RV off a ravine in Colbert County. It happened just after 3:00pm Tuesday. WHNT NEWS 19 spoke exclusively with an eye witness who says it appeared a man drove the RV off a hill behind a house on Lakewood View Drive in eastern Colbert County, in an area known as The Pointe.
Martha Gilley stood in awe on her back porch Tuesday afternoon overlooking Wilson Lake. Instead of the normal serene view, it was if she became trapped in the middle of a horrific movie scene.
"It was not a pleasant sight at all," describes Gilley.
Gilley says her heart skipped a beat when she saw the RV headed towards her neighbor's house.
"I looked up and this motor home was coming down the road," explains Gilley. "It was moving kind of fast. I thought it was going to put some brakes on, but it never did put on any breaks, it just kept going."
Gilley says the RV flipped over the steep embankment, killing the driver.
"It hit real hard, real fast and I heard three loud moans from whoever was inside," says Gilley.
Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley pronounced 58-year-old Larry Hines dead at the scene. Utley says he's determined that the cause of death is multiple blunt force trauma.
Alabama State Troopers are investigating the deadly accident. At this time, they haven't said exactly what caused the RV to crash.
