Severe storms caused significant damage in northeast Alabama today. Reported tornadoes hit homes, downed trees and have made it tough for rescue crews to get to people who need help.
There are numerous reports of damage coming in to our newsroom from DeKalb and Marshall counties. There are reports a tornado hit homes in Preston Island Circle, on the Jackson/Marshall county line. There are also reports of damage to homes in Langston, and Powell, and reports of trees down in Rainsville.

In Sylvania, there is significant damage on DeKalb County Road 102. If you live in the area, officials ask you to go to Sylvania City Hall to meet with officials. They plan to set up a command center there.
Sylvania police officers and DeKalb County sheriff's deputies will patrol the area to keep everyone out. Please DO NOT go to the area to drive around.
Minor injuries were reported in Sylvania, and about a dozen homes were destroyed. A few dozen more were damaged in the storms. No deaths have been reported yet.

Before the storms hit Marshall, DeKalb and Jackson counties, they brought large hail in Lauderdale, Lawrence, Morgan and Madison counties. In some areas, WHNT viewers reported getting hail as large as golf balls, or baseballs.

There are also reports that traffic is stopped on Highway 72 in the Scottsboro area because of downed power lines in different spots.
Around 2pm, rescue crews in Huntsville and Madison County worked about a dozen accidents, involving cars that hydroplaned or hit power poles. There were also two head-on collisions.
Also in Huntsville, a tree fell on a house on Brookline Drive in northwest Huntsville, off of Sparkman Drive. A WHNT viewer also reported trees down on power lines in Hazel Green, on Bentley Drive.
In Lauderdale County, there were several reports of damage, including power out in Greenhill, trees down on County Road 94, trees down on two cars on Hickory Drive, north of Florence, trees fell on house and shop on County Road 25, one mile south of County Road 170 in Killen; and a roof blew off a toolshed in Sweetwater. The EMA said the storms were very intense, and were surprised the damage was not much worse.
