HUNTSVILLE, AL—
After being rejected by college hockey's powerhouse conference, the UAH Chargers decided to knock out a powerhouse.Just months after having their application to join the CCHA rejected, UAH upset CCHA member Notre Dame 3-2 Friday. It was a stunning loss for the 5th-ranked Fighting Irish, and a major boost for UAH (1-1), which now gears up for a weekend road series at Air Force. Many have questioned whether UAH hockey will be able to continue in the future with no conference to call home. Their current league is the CHA, which is disbanding after this season. A group called "Save UAH Hockey" was formed in the summer to promote the program.
UAH Head Coach Danton Cole calls the win a milestone.
"Beating a Top-5 team in the country is pretty good, and nothing that we didn't think we could do," said Cole. "I also it gives a lot of hope for our fans, and a lot of belief. Hopefully it will be a rallying point for the season."
UAH junior goalie Cameron Talbot was named CHA defensive player of the week. The Chargers first home game at the Von Braun Center will be October 23 against Western Michigan.
