DECATUR, AL -
Decatur Police say one teenager was killed, and two others are now in custody after an attempted burglary and home invasion on 5th Avenue SW in Decatur. A person in the home fired shots as the three tried to break into the home. One teenager died at the scene.
The teenager who was killed was Taveon Mason, 14. He was a freshman at Austin High School.
Police say around 10am, the three tried to break into a home located at 1432 5th Avenue SW. The homeowner was asleep inside, and woke up. Police say the homeowner grabbed a handgun and confronted the teens. The homeowner fired one shot, striking and killing Mason. The other two teens ran away.
Police quickly caught one of the teens, who was 16. The other, who is 14, was later found and arrested at his home.
The home is two blocks away from Brookhaven Middle School. Police called school officials to notify them about the shooting, and to say they were looking for a suspect in the area.
The school went on lock down for about 45 minutes, according to Phil Hastings, Decatur Schools Supervisor of Safety. Hastings said classes went on as scheduled, but no one was allowed in or out of the school.
Mason's body was taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. Police have charged the other two teens with second-degree burglary. They were both taken to the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
The Madison County Sheriff's Department is helping Decatur Police with the investigation, using special computer software that allows them to do a three-dimensional rendering of the crime scene.
Police questioned the homeowner, and have not filed any charges in the case. The investigation continues.
